Yelp Elites take over OOBC

Yelp Elites took over OOBC and it was a blast!

This past Thursday, 12/14/17, we welcomed into the brewery 20+ Yelp Elite to sample our beers, learn a little about our brewing process, and also a little about the history of 716 Pacific Ave.  As we all know, the Yelp Elite are not the softest of critics.  We took a bit of a risk inviting the likes of the Elite folks into the brewery, especially as the first Yelp Elite event ever to happen in Tacoma!  But…  we were pretty confident in the product we serve, our amazing staff, and the Yelpers themselves.  And as far as we can tell all have been satisfied.

The Yelp staff, Mia and C. Hayley, put together greeting, candy bag making, and card making stations while the Odd Squad prepared tables of delectable delights put together by 3uilt.  Meats and cheeses and pickles and light bites to delight all palates!  While all of this was going on the Beertenders prepared a tasting for the Yelp Elite.  They started off with the Notteronsense IPA.  Whilst sipping this nicely balanced IPA they all got a tour of the back of the house and a little lesson on the brewing process by our head brewer, Greer Hubbard.  Followed by the IPA was our flagship Ottermelon Hefeweizen.  More talk about back of the house and then we moved on to a little about the history of the brewery, where we came from and where we are now.  How we like to incorporate tradition with a twist…  just like our Winterface Warmer Warmer, a favorite among the Elites.  We ended with the Comrade Otter’s Imperial Chocolate Stout, which Carolyn (co-manager/social media sensei) touts as the very best cupcake ingredient, EVER.  The patrons were so please with this brew that Greer tapped our very last, sacred 1/6bbl keg to share with the Yelpers.  Oh boy, were they blown away!

While sipping the 5oz pour of a very tasty, heavy brew, Carolyn took them up the mysterious spiral staircase for the grand finale.  A little lesson in the history of this Veteran owned and operated brewery in the heart of downtown Tacoma.  The Army insignia remains on the pillars of the ballroom of what was the African American USO.  The drywall dust that covers the old printing press.  The maps and pictures that used to adorn the walls.  The Yelpers in attendance were so appreciative of this historical tour of our little, precious space on 716 Pacific Avenue and we couldn’t be more proud to share it with them!

So, whether you love or loathe the Yelp community, one thing is for certain…  they are passionate about their interests and sharing that with others in the community.  We were happy with all the positive feedback and were super proud to be the first Yelp Elite location in Tacoma!  Cheers!

Hurricane Harvey Relief Benefit Update

Giving back to our community is something we really pride ourselves on. And Tacoma… you really showed your generosity at our Hurricane Harvey Relief Benefit last weekend. We challenged our beertenders to a contest of who could sell the most raffle tickets and they did an amazing job. We raffles off six gift cards and various merchandise. The Sabia’s won the grand prize of two tickets to the final Sounders match of the regular season!
With everyone’s help, and love of live music (Padre Paul and His One Man Band), otter merchandise, and beer, we were able to send off a nice check to the United Way of Greater Houston.

Veteran’s Day Fisher House Benefit

As a Veteran owned brewery we are passionate about giving back to the military community.  On this Veteran’s Day we are choosing to support the Fisher House of Joint Base Lewis McChord.  Fisher House believes in providing families a comforting, secure, and nurturing environment while receiving care at Madigan Army Medical Center.

So, how can we help?  Easy peasy!

On 11/11/2016 from 6-10pm:

The Fisher House is currently in need of the following items and by donating them you will receive a rafftle ticket:

Laundry Soap (who doesn’t love clean clothes?)

Fabric Softener (and soft clean clothes at that?)

Individually wrapped snacks (don’t we all stress eat?)

We will donate 50% of raffle ticket sales, and 10% of tasting rooms sales, during the hours of 6-10pm to the Fisher House.

So, what are we raffling off?  Glad you asked! Gift cards and beer swag, friends!  You know what?  The holidays are upon us and everyone loves the gift of beer swag!

So, drink up! We firmly believe that drinking for a cause tastes soooo much better!

Hurricane Matthew Relief Event

Giving back to the community, whether it be near or far, is something very near and dear to our hearts.  Recently, Haiti was once again devastated by Mother Nature, and more specifically, Hurricane Matthew.  We are coming together to help that community by partnering with MedShare, a humanitarian aid organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of people, communities, and the planet by sourcing and delivering medical supplies and equipment to those in need around the world.  There are currently 175,000 people who were evacuated from their homes and 1.4 million in need of humanitarian aid.  Let’s help them by raising pints and buying raffles (beer swag, folks)!

On 10/20, from 6-10pm we will be donating a portion of tasting room and raffle sales to help Haiti.  Let’s do this!

For more information about MedShare, and their efforts to assist the victims of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, please visit:

We hope to see you in the tasting room!

Ps.  We hear Momma Otter’s Pancake Porter is making a special appearance.  You’re welcome!

Orlando Relief Effort Continues

orlando benefitFirst and foremost we would like to thank everyone who came out to our Orlando relief benefit last Thursday. It is because of your support we were able to raise a total of $616.28. On top of the total dollars raised, Odd Otter is contributing an additional $555.09, bringing a total of $1171.37 to be sent to the Planting Peace organization.

We are going to continue rasing money for the organization through the taproom until July 9th. Next time you visit us be sure to look for the Orlando relief jar and help us to continue to show support to those who are in need.

If you would like to electronically donate please follow the link to the Planting Peace page at

Thank you Tacoma for being so supportive and a great example of how we can all come together to show our support.

Orlando Relief Benefit

We arorlando benefite hosting a benefit all day Thursday for the victims and the families of the Orlando Tragedy.

10% of our Tasting Room sales for the day, and 50% of raffle tickets sold will go directly to aid those affected. We are all in this together and we hope you will help us in the effort to support those in need. And if you get some raffle tickets, you just might win some Odd Otter swag or a fancy gift card! Our very own Michael Gordon will be playing some home-grown music at 6:30pm as well.

We have chosen to direct the funds raised to Planting Peace through their page at

Among the many charities working to assist those suffering from the terrorist attack in Orlando, we chose Planting Peace for a few reasons:
– Planting Peace is less visible than the larger organizations, and their focus in this response is more focused: their funds will go to help cover medical and funerary costs for those directly affected.
– Funds raised by Planting Peace’s efforts will be earmarked for this purpose only, rather than going to the organization’s general fund; this allows for more focused and efficient giving
– Planting Peace has an international focus as well, using directed fundraising efforts to address specific initiatives

However you feel directed to give, we encourage you to do so. When tragedy strikes, we are all given an opportunity to pay it forward. Seize that chance.

We Need Bail Money!

A few of the Otters are “Doing little time for a lot of good!”

On June 15, we’ll be going behind bars to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Stop by, call or email your donations for our “bail” prior to our arrest!

Kids and adults in our community are living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases that take away everyday freedoms like walking, talking, hugging and even breathing. By donating to our bail, you can bring strength and hope to individuals and families in our community living with these life-threatening diseases
